Superconvergence analysis of the linear finite element method and a gradient recovery postprocessing on anisotropic meshes

چکیده
For the linear finite element method based on general unstructured anisotropic meshes in two dimensions, we establish the superconvergence in energy norm of the finite element solution to the interpolation of the exact solution for elliptic problems. We also prove the superconvergence of the postprocessing process based on the global L2-projection of the gradient of the finite element solution. Our basic assumptions are: (i) the mesh is quasiuniform under a Riemannian metric and (ii) each adjacent element pair forms an approximate (anisotropic) parallelogram. The analysis follows the same methodology developed by Bank and Xu in 2003 for the case of quasi-uniform meshes, and the results can be considered as an extension of their conclusion to the adaptive anisotropic meshes. Numerical examples involving both internal and boundary layers are presented in support of the theoretical analysis.

Superconvergence estimates are studied in this paper on quadratic finite element discretizations for second order elliptic boundary value problems on mildly structured triangular meshes. For a large class of practically useful grids, the finite element solution uh is proven to be superclose to the interpolant uI and as a result a postprocessing gradient recovery scheme for uh can be devised. Th...
متن کاملConvergence and Superconvergence of a Nonconforming Finite Element on Anisotropic Meshes
The main aim of this paper is to study the error estimates of a nonconforming finite element for general second order problems, in particular, the superconvergence properties under anisotropic meshes. Some extrapolation results on rectangular meshes are also discussed. Finally, numerical results are presented, which coincides with our theoretical analysis perfectly.

Superconvergence results and several gradient recovery methods of finite element methods in flat spaces are generalized to the surface linear finite element method for the LaplaceBeltrami equation on general surfaces with mildly structured triangular meshes. For a large class of practically useful grids, the surface linear finite element solution is proven to be superclose to an interpolant of ...

In this paper, the global superconvergence analysis for the finite element approximation of the distributed optimal control governed by Stokes equations is discussed. For the control, a global superconvergence result is derived by applying patch recovery technique. For the state and the co-state, the global superconvergence results are derived by applying some postprocessing techniques for the ...
